Balancing Work and Christmas

Samuel Stamp-Dod shares his tips for getting the right balance between running a business and enjoying some Christmas sparkle

VIP xmas 3Sometimes as a business owner it can be really easy to keep working through day by day and forget the Christmas spirit.  There’s no getting away from the fact that it is Christmas; everywhere you go there’s Christmas songs playing, there are adverts featuring the man in the big red suit and, if you have young children, glitter and excitement everywhere!

Running a business is hard work but that doesn’t mean you can’t still have fun and enjoy the festive period.

Don’t forget to take time out to enjoy the festivities with your friends and family.  Make sure you book some time off, even if there is just you in the business.  Don’t fool yourself into thinking that everyone will expect you to be ‘open’ every day, your customers will understand if you’re closed for a few days.

There is nothing wrong with putting yourself first once in a while.  If you are able to take a break, this will help you to come back stronger and work more productively.VIP xmas

If you are involved in one of our many vital services that run 365 days per year and are working on Christmas day, remember to celebrate with colleagues or customers. Even if it is just taking 5 minutes to enjoy a mince pie, cup of tea and a chat.

Here are a few tips to add a little sparkle to your Christmas:

  • Make any time you do have off extra special and spend quality time with your loved ones. You could play games, cook or decorate the tree together or even just take a relaxing walk in the countryside.
  • Share the load! Don’t get trapped into trying to please everyone as well as running your business. Let everyone get involved so the pressure isn’t all on you.
  • Have at least one day completely away from work. Don’t even check your emails or messages!
  • Say no! Many of us try to take on too much but it is fine to say no and in fact it is much better than doing a shoddy, rush job because you don’t have time to do it properly. You may also be able to delay some projects until the New Year – just remember to keep your customers informed.
  • Get organised. Write a list of what needs to be done and delegate where appropriate.
