Zen and the art of small business maintenance

Suffolk – understandably – is the home for dozens, if not hundreds, of small businesses. After all, as one of the best places in the UK to live, with affordable house prices and a huge variety of attractions, it would be.

But only a few of those small businesses grow into something bigger.Business Plumber image

Of course, not all of them want to – and that’s fine. But sometimes the only barrier to growth is one word. And that’s the ‘my’ in ‘my business’.

Yes, it is your business if you came up with the idea and turned it into reality. But ask yourself these questions:

  • How much of the business actually needs to be yours?
  • Do you really have to do everything yourself?
  • And are you equally good at all of it?

Because that’s where the zen comes in…

Finding your centre

It’s entirely possible that you’re a wizard with your accounts. But unless you’re an accountant, that’s not what clients are paying you to do.

You may have a superb telephone manner. But you shouldn’t be wasting it on cold callers.

And you may be the Spider-person of the worldwide web. But if you’re not making your living as a web designer, building your perfect online presence might be a job for a specialist.

So the advice from your neighbourhood zen master would probably be to focus on what brings you joy. And better yet, on what your clients actually pay you for. Because the more of that you do, the less time you’ll need to spend on the other things.

Provided, of course, that you can get someone else – the right someone else – to do them for you.

And provided that you can explain, clearly and precisely, what you want them to do.

Take note, Grasshopper…

Most sole traders do start by doing everything themselves, because they don’t have a choice. But it’s easy to use that as an excuse later on, when you’re already earning enough from your enterprise to think about outsourcing.

By then, of course, you’ll have a pretty clear idea of how you work. But you’ve probably never tried explaining that to anyone else. So step one is to write down exactly what you do, and how you do it.

At which point you may well discover that it could be done better. A very useful thing to learn before you start briefing someone else.
