The first 20 years

Emma Felgate from Emma's Florist explains her journey to reaching the milestone of 20 years in business

Emmas Florist St Peters StreetWhen I left school, I wasn’t too sure whether I wanted to go into window dressing or doing floristry, so I took myself off to Thurrock College and did a window dressing, art and design course. I loved it but felt like a really needed to give my Floristry a go, so I did my Florist course of four years, and absolutely loved it and wanted to carry on. I was very lucky for my work experience to work in a florist in Shenfield.

I become a Saturday girl for her after I finished my course and worked for a couple Florists and then at the age of 21, decided to start my own business!

I had met my husband in Chelmsford but he lived in Ipswich and we decided to get a flat together. The flat was above the shop so we took on both and that was the best thing we have done but also it was the most nerve racking thing to do. I thought I knew a lot about business but there was so much to still learn!

I have since grown the shop we moved into a bigger premises four doors down from my original shop. This one is four times the size. I have since launched a flower school, subscription boxes, flowers for offices flowers for weddings, funerals and gifts.

Taking the business forward ...

I launched the flower school because I love teaching people, I love making them have their happy place! As my customers say, it’s a lovely evening where everything is provided, and I show them step-by-step on how to make the product. We run a workshop once a month and we’ve had so many amazing reviews.

On my 20th year, which was 11th of August 2023, we launched a subscription box where we can take our flowers nationwide!

We have since taken this to another level, and we deliver our bouquets nationwide too!

The support that we have from our customers is just immense, I cannot thank them enough.

I would love you to follow me:
