It’s a hot topic in the news right now about the hidden charges and extra costs customers are facing when hiring a car or van.

Customers are often swayed by the low rental prices hire firms will advertise, only to be hit with additional charges upon return of the vehicle, often resulting in doubling or trebling the cost of the hire itself.

At Gallagher Car and Van Rentals, we feel we have a duty of care to our customers to ensure all charges are highlighted upfront so that there are no nasty surprises. This keeps our customers happy and our service polished which is why so many customers hire from Gallaghers, time after time.

Here’s a brief checklist of what to be aware of when hiring a car or van from any hire company. For a full guidance list, please send your request via email to lisa@gogallagher.co.uk

  • Daily hire cost – What’s included in the price?
  • Insurance excess – What is the amount of excess you are liable for on the insurance?
  • Premium to reduce the excess – Whilst this is an upfront cost offered by the hire company, it is in our opinion an empty gesture.
  • Additional driver charges – Often there is the requirement for more than one driver to be on your rental agreement.
  • Additional mileage charges – ALWAYS ask how much mileage is included in your hire cost?
  • Damage reports – When you check out your vehicle, the hire company should walk you around the vehicle, documenting any damage already present.
  • Fuel charges – Avoid companies who offer a ‘full out – empty in’ policy.
